Michel Chapoutier is the master of Northern Rhone wines. Here, he has turned his hand to the wines of Roussillon where he owns the Domaine of Bila-Haut. The white is made from vines grown at around 500 metres elevation in the Agly valley. Grenache Blanc is the dominant variety, which brings a stoned fruit richness and creaminess, supported by Macabeu, Roussanne, and Marsanne. This is a delicious expression of Mediterranean white wine with notes of citrus oil, wild herbs, and minerality. Superb value for money.

The Wine Region
Languedoc Roussillon
Languedoc Roussillon is France's largest producing wine region. A tad smaller than Bordeaux but it is more productive. In this region you will find a myriad of wine styles. Its proximity to the Mediterranean, also covering some regions nestled up against the Pyrenees, means that many grape varieties thrive here, from the well-known internationals to, what we think are more interesting, the local Southern French varieties, such as Syrah, Grenache, Cinsault etc.
The same applies for whites, being more successful when local varieties such as Vermentino, Grenache Blanc, Viognier are used.

M Chapoutier has its roots in the Rhone Valley dating back to 1808, but its reputation excellence begins with the arrival of Michel Chapoutier in 1990. Chapoutier converted all the domaine's vineyards to biodynamics and attracted huge attention from the press, his greatest advocate being Robert Parker. Not willing to rest on his laurels, Chapoutier has set about acquiring new vineyards, expanding beyond his home turf in the Rhone valley: Heathcote in Australia, Alsace, and slightly closer to home, Domaine Bila Haut in Roussillon.
