Les Perrieres de Lafleur 2020 Bordeaux Superieur
Les Perrieres de Lafleur is the result of 10 years of practice at the Guinaudeau family's, the owners of Chateau Lafleur in Pomerol, vineyard in the village of Meyney, on the edge of Fronsac. Up until the 2018 vintage the wine was known as Acte. With this vintage, which also happens to great a great Right Bank vintage, the quality of the wine has changed quite dramatically, in the same way that we noticed the phenomenal change in its sister wine, Chateau Grand Village.
We had always been great admirers of the Acte wines (the 9 vintages produced here were named Acte I through to Acte IX), but did not buy them for one reason or another. Les Perrieres is another level entirely.
At the heart of the wine is a few hectares of vineyards on limestone planted to roughly equal proportions of Merlot and Bouchet, both from cuttings from vines at Lafleur. Bouchet is another name for Cabernet Franc, not so much in common use nowadays, but the Chateau claims that it is a separate biotype which was all but wiped out by the big frost of 1956, with only a few properties in Pomerol with remaining vines.
The wine shares DNA with Lafleur itself - the richness and depth, the sheer power and intensity. It is very difficult to judge how long this will last in the cellar. It could reach its peak in 10 years, but perhaps even longer. If you can't resist it, try it now. It will still reward you with its glossy, intense blackberry, incense, and tobacco leaf notes.
