Regular readers of these pages will know our admiration of this wine. The Guinaudeau family of Chateau Lafleur in Pomerol owns this little estate in Moulliac just outside the appellation of Fronsac. The vineyards are planted to Merlot and Bouchet (a biotype of Cabernet Franc) made from cuttings of Chateau Lafleur itself. Since 2018 the wine has improved out of sight, so much so that we reckon this is one of the greatest value wines produced in Bordeaux.
In a similar vein to the fabulous 2019 the 2020 has beautiful precision, depth, and power. It certainly is a weighty wine, clocking in at 15%, but it carries its weight so well. Yes, it is pure indulgence and hedonism, but it is also cerebral and complex - the kind of wine you could discuss for hours over the dinner table.
"Sinewy, saline, finely-boned and full of peony florals and supple raspberry fruits. You are not getting the typical Bordeaux wine, it has a serious feel and is even a little bit aloof at this point. Dark fruits, tobacco leaf and flowers - you see the sculpting hand of the winemakers, teasing out the clay-limestone freshness from the soils. An unmissable value wine in the vintage. No frost here in 2021. All the Bouchet (Cabernet Franc) at Grand Village is from massal selection at this point." Jane Anson, Decanter magazine, 92Pts
"Pretty floral-violet nose with plenty of juice on the palate. Rich but sappy with a mineral edge. Tannins long and extremely fine. Clearly GV (Good Value)." James Lawther MW, Jancisrobinson.com 16.5pts
