We have been looking for a sensibly priced, but excellent Chateauneuf du Pape for ages. I reckon we have found it with Closerie de Vaudieu.

This is a well-established winery founded in the 18th century and has been run by the Brechet family for 50 years. This is an important estate with 70 hectares of vineyards in the appellation, situated just to the south of Chateau Rayas, most of which are over 65 years old.

The wine has everything that we have been looking for in Chateauneuf: the combination of body and depth, but also a drinkability. What we love is the pure Chateauneuf typicity showing black olives, Mediterranean herbs, forest fruits, and a liqueur-like intensity.

Chateau de Vaudieu

Chateau de Vaudieu has been in the Bréchet family for over 50 years, run by Laurent Bréchet today. The estate is 70 hectares, 60 of which are for black varieties. The vineyards are located in the heart of the appellation, just to the northeast of the village and neighbouring Pignan and Chateau Rayas.

Two reds are produced: The Grand Vin, which is made from the oldest parcels, and Closerie de Vaudieu, which is effectively a second wine. There is also an excellent white which is made mainly from Grenache Blanc.

These wines offer remarkable value for money: they ooze with style and authenticity, and whilst they are not blockbusters, they are delicious, refined, and worthy of a space in any collector's cellar.

The Region

Rhone Valley

Rhone Valley

The Rhône Valley wine region follows the Rhône river from just south of Lyon in the North to its delta on the Mediterranean coast. The region can roughly be divided into two parts: The Northern Rhone, where Syrah dominates the reds, and the Southern Rhone, where the reds are almost always blends, but with Grenache Noir the dominant variety.

The region is also know for its whites, with the tiny AOC of Condrieu being the spiritual home of Viognier, and the Marsanne / Roussanne wines of Hermitage, St Joseph and others.
