Chris Williams is South Africa's grandmaster of Rhone grape varieties. His Grenache Noir comes from a one hectare vineyard that was planted in 2007, just 4KM from False Bay, so quite a cool climate. The wine is fragrant and elegant (for South Africa) but rich in texture and mouthfeel with notes of clove, red fruits, vanilla pod, and black pepper

South Africa

South Africa is developing at break-neck speed, so much so that I find it difficult to keep up with all the new, young, driven producers making the next big thing from old-vine Chenin or Chenin blends. There are many high points in our range, but worthy of particular mention are the cool, coastal wines of Newton Johnson, makers of Noble Grape’s favourite best value Pinot Noir, and the quite incredible wines of Chris Williams from The Foundry. From time to time we will have parcels of the aforementioned parcel wines, so keep checking out our latest releases.

The Foundry

Chris Williams is the genius behind The Foundry, which was originally conceived in the early 2000s when Chris was head winemaker at Meerlust. Since 2019 Chris has resigned from day job and has totally dedicated himself to his own project, in collaboration with his silent business partner James Reid. Chris specialises in Rhone varieties and he is making a great name for himself: his 2015 Grenache Blanc was made White Wine of the Year in the John Platter Guide, and has countless other accolades. Chris has a knack at turning out outstanding, category-defining wines, which to be honest, are absolute superb value for money when you consider the small scale and artisan approach that he takes. The wines come and go and we rarely have his full range in stock at any one time, and this is one of the few places you can buy with confidence right across the range and in any vintage.
