We welcome the spectacular wines of Romain Guiberteau to our range. Romain joined his family's vine growing business in 1996 following a stint at Clos Rougeard in Saumur Champigny. Romain is now making some of the Loire's greatest Chenin Blancs and Cabernet Francs, from low yielding, old vine parcels in Saumur.
The Saumur Rouge is sourced from 3 parcels of old vines (50-60 years) totalling 2 hectares. Manual harvest. 100% destemmed. Fermentation in concrete tanks with natural yeast. Matured in tank for 6-12 months.
This is hugely impressive wine that has dark fruit character and huge tannic structure. Despite its impressive size, the whole thing feels so elegant and fine. Although it is Cabernet Franc, it is decidedly more Burgundy than you would expect. With a bit of opening and breathing in a decanter for a few hours it opens up showing its minerality.
