Bela is brand new wine from the Ribera del Duero founded by Rioja winery CVNE, and it's an absolute cracker. The wine is very different to its Rioja counterparts: powerful and dense, but there is an elegance to it as well. Perfume of deep, black fruits, spice, minerals and a Claret-like softness, generosity and complexity that belies its price. This is set to be one of the stars from our Spanish collection.

Bela Ribera del Duero

Bela

Bela is a new project in Ribera del Duero from one of Rioja's leading producers CVNE. The project begins with a single vineyard of 83 hectares in Villalba del Duero at an elevation around 800m, and entirely planted with Tinto del País, the local name for Tempranillo.

CVNE purchased the winery and part of the vineyards from Anta Bandera, a winery partly owned by Hollywood actor Antonio Banderas, and renamed it Bela after the nickname of the daughter of one of CVNE's founders.

The wines from here can be characterised as being some of the more elegant and refined wines from the region, and we expect to see more wines emerging from this burgeoning winery as and when they acquire new vineyards.

The Wine Region

Ribera del Duero

Ribera del Duero

Ribera del Duero is, along with Rioja & Priorat, one of Spain's most highly regarded regions for red wine, although only in the last two decades or so has it become part of the mainstream, hitherto an insider's wine. Here, the vineyards are dominated by Tempranillo, or Tinto de Pais as it is know here and are at, mostly, pretty high altitudes. This is an extreme environment where the winters are long and severe, with the summers dry and exhaustingly hot.

The region was put on the map by the world class producer Vega Sicilia, later being followed by Alejandro Fernandez of Tinto Pesquera and Peter Sisseck of Dominio de Pingus and Alnardo. These are the three pivotal producers who are pretty much gold standard for excellence in the region and Spain on the whole.
