Trebbiano Spoletino
Trebbiano Spoletino is one of the many vines in Italy that have the prefix Trebbiano but it is totally unrelated to any other: this is an entirely distinct variety.
It is grown in Umbria, exclusively in the DOCs of Montefalco, Assisi, Spoleto, and Trasimeno. The latest vine census from 2010 shows 200 hectares planted, but there has been a revival. We expect the next census will show greater planting.
We find this a remarkable variety. For us, much more interesting than Grechetto which is still the most widely planted variety for Montefalco Bianco. Tenuta Alzatura is a firm believer in this variety, growing it exclusively for their two versions of Montefalco Bianco, Cortili and Aria di Casa.
It is noted for its aromatics, citrus and floral, and its moderately high acidity which also makes it suitable as a base for sparkling wines.
