Rolle

Rolle

Rolle is a white grape variety that is primarily grown in the South of France, particularly in Provence: notably in the AOC of Bellet, and as a small part of the blend in some Cotes de Provence Roses. It is also known by several other names, including Vermentino (in Tuscany and other parts of Italy), Favorita (in Piedmont), and Pigato (in Liguria). The use of the name 'Vermentino' has recently been outlawed in France by the Italian authorities. Therefore, the usage of the term 'Rolle' may become more commonplace in the near future.

Rolle is a late-ripening grape variety that is well-suited to the warm, Mediterranean climate of the South of France. The grape produces wines that are typically crisp and acidic, with aromas and flavours of citrus, white flowers, and sometimes a hint of minerality. Some Rolle wines may also have a slightly herbal or grassy character.

Rolle is often used in blends, particularly in Provence where it is often accompanied by other white grape varieties such as Ugni Blanc, Clairette, and Bourboulenc, notably in Bandol.
