Aglianico

Aglianico

Aglianico is a black grape variety primarily grown in southern Italy, particularly in the regions of Campania and Basilicata. It is known for producing full-bodied, tannic wines with high acidity and complex flavours that can include notes of dark fruit, herbs, and spices. Aglianico wines are often compared to those made from Nebbiolo. Along with Gaglioppo and Nero di Troia it is one of the most noble black varieties from the south.

The vine's spiritual home is in the province of Avellino in Campania where it must comprise at least 85% of the wines of Taurasi. The other notable DOCG is Aglianico del Vulture in Basilicata. Both of these regions are largely volcanic in origin, making wines that are built to last.
