Arneis

Arneis

Arneis is one of the better thought of white varieties from Piedmont. However, that was not always the case. According Italy's vine census there were a mere 45 hectares of Arneis in Italy in 1970 , largely down to two producers, Bruno Giacosa and Vietti: the former being credited with saving the variety from near extinction. Its rising popularity is reflected in the 910 hectares in the 2010 census.

The variety has a reputation for being difficult to grow, as it is prone to low yields and is susceptible to disease. However, when grown successfully, Arneis can produce wines that are highly expressive and full of character.

Arneis is often used to produce still white wines, but it can also be used to produce sparkling wines. The grape is sometimes blended with other varieties, such as Chardonnay or Sauvignon Blanc, to add complexity and balance to the wine.
