The Country

Argentina Wines

Argentina

Argentina has established its reputation in the wine world based on its superb Malbecs, but is far from being a one trick pony. It is a country with wide variations in climate from the high altitude sites of Salta, some now exceeding 3,000 metres, to the valleys of Mendoza where 15% ABV Malbecs are not uncommon.

The cooler regions are making some interesting wines from Cabernet Franc, and if there were a candidate for the country's flagship white variety, the highly aromatic Torrontes would be a strong contender.

The Sub Region

Uco Valley

Uco Valley

Uco Valley, located in the Mendoza region of Argentina, is a premier wine-producing area known for its high-altitude vineyards and exceptional wines. Situated at the foothills of the Andes, the valley stretches across the departments of Tunuyán, Tupungato, and San Carlos. The vineyards in Uco Valley are positioned at elevations ranging from 900 to 1,500 meters (approximately 3,000 to 5,000 feet) above sea level, which is among the highest in the world for viticulture. Beyond its vineyards, Uco Valley offers a rich cultural heritage and stunning natural landscapes, making it a perfect destination for wine enthusiasts and tourists.

This high elevation plays a crucial role in the valley's unique terroir. The intense sunlight and cooler temperatures, especially the significant diurnal temperature variation, create ideal growing conditions for grapes. The warm days ensure optimal ripening, while the cool nights help retain acidity, resulting in wines with balanced flavours and complexity. Additionally, the alluvial soils, a mix of sand, silt, and clay with good drainage properties, contribute to the distinctive minerality and structure of the wines.

Uco Valley is renowned for its Malbec, a grape that produces wines with deep, dark hues, luscious fruit flavours, and velvety textures. These wines often feature hints of blackberry, plum, and violet, with a touch of spice. In addition to Malbec, the valley excels in crafting top-notch Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, and Chardonnay, each showcasing unique characteristics influenced by the region's terroir. The white wines, particularly Chardonnay, are appreciated for their refreshing acidity, lively citrus flavours, and delicate minerality, offering a sensory journey that will excite any wine lover.

Uco Valley's unique blend of high altitude, optimal climate, and diverse soils sets it apart as one of Argentina's most exclusive and dynamic wine regions. It is revered for its distinctive and high-quality wines, a true privilege for any wine enthusiast.
