The Country
Argentina
Argentina has established its reputation in the wine world based on its superb Malbecs, but is far from being a one trick pony. It is a country with wide variations in climate from the high altitude sites of Salta, some now exceeding 3,000 metres, to the valleys of Mendoza where 15% ABV Malbecs are not uncommon.
The cooler regions are making some interesting wines from Cabernet Franc, and if there were a candidate for the country's flagship white variety, the highly aromatic Torrontes would be a strong contender.

This high elevation plays a crucial role in the valley's unique terroir. The intense sunlight and cooler temperatures, especially the significant diurnal temperature variation, create ideal growing conditions for grapes. Additionally, the alluvial soils, a mix of sand, silt, and clay with good drainage properties, contribute to the distinctive minerality and structure of the wines.
