Bolgheri and Tuscan Coast
Bolgheri and the Tuscan Coast
Moving away from the hills and mountains of inland Tuscany, the coast has a more moderate climate, with a cooling influence from the sea. Here, Sangiovese is no longer King, instead the best wines are made from international varieties of Cabernets, Merlot, Syrah et al. There is an argument that these wines have lost a little of their ‘Italianality’, but in my opinion, not so - it’s just a different interpretation. These wines have carved out a niche in being the so-called ‘Super Tuscans’, of course, led by the world-beating Sassicaia of Tenuta San Guido, then followed by Ornellaia, Gaja’s Ca Marcanda, Tua Rita and many others.
