Hawkes Bay

Hawkes Bay

The original home of viticulture in New Zealand, which predates Marlborough by over a century. Here it is the Bordeaux black varieties of Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon and Malbec which are king, particularly on the dry, alluvial beds of the Gimblett Gravels. But, more recently, wine lovers are becoming aware of the Syrahs (never called Shiraz here) which are among some of the best examples of their kind from the new world.
