Villa Cerna 2016 Chianti Classico Riserva
Villa Cerna's Chianti Classico is a step up from the regular Classico, Primocolle, being made with miniscule yields and older vines of 95% Sangiovese and 5% Colorino. The wine is aged in medium sized barrels for 14 months, and only produced in the best years, 2015 being a great example. The wine is powerful with grippy tannins which envelope the palate bringing waves of flavours of dark forest fruits, back cherries, victoria plums with added notes of saddle leather, violets and dried rose petals.
95% Sangiovese, 5% Colorino
Villa Cerna is the jewel in the crown of Famiglia Cecchi's vineyards. Cecchi was first established in 1893 and has built up an enviable estate of vineyards around Tuscany including Val delle Rose in Grosseto and Castello Montaùto in San Gimignano. The property has its origins in the Middle Ages dating back to 1001AD.
The vineyards are located in Castellina in Chianti, in the south of the zone and is one of the first vineyards you encounter when leaving Siena. The estate is now 83 hectares of vineyards on chalky, alkaline soils at around 280 metres above sea level
Villa Cerna Riserva is made from savagely low yields of around 4 tonnes per hectare, which is half of the permitted maximum. This means that the wines have great concentration from the best selected grapes and parcels, and only made in the best years. The wine spends 14 months in barriques and a t least a further 9 months in bottle before being put to market.
