Ver Sacrum 2021 Geisha Dragon del Desierto
We don't go out of our way to find crazy wines; sometimes they find us. Geisha Dragon is one of those.
Made by Ver Sacrum, a microscopic winery in the out-of-the-way region of Los Chacayes in Mendoza's Uco Valley. This is the absolute definition of a 'garage' wine. It all sounds rather conventional, being a blend of Viognier and Marsanne. Then, for good measure, 10% of Pedro Gimenez (AKA Criolla Blanca, and not related to Pedro Ximenez of Spain) is added, which has been aged in cask and under flor (like Fino Sherry).
I was expecting more craziness in the wine than its production methods suggest. However, you can't deny its singularity and its brilliance. For example, I was expecting some of Fino's aldehydic notes on the nose but found no trace. Instead, it is a richly textured, semi-aromatic, individual wine that you won't forget in a hurry
