New Riff Distillery
New Riff is our latest discoveries in Kentucky Whiskies. The Distillery was founded in 2014 by Ken Lewis, but despite its creative spirit, it holds fast to the traditions of Kentucky Bourbon and Rye.
At the heart of this is the use of sour mash (using a portion of mash from a previous batch to start the fermentation of a new batch) and bottled-in-bond: a regulated term which amongst other things means the whiskey has been aged at least four years (there is no minimum age for Bourbon) in cask.
The Bourbons from New Riff also contain a high Rye content at around 30% of the mash bill, bringing a dark-berried fruitiness to their whiskies. Aligned with our sensibilities, the whiskies are bottled at 100 proof, and no chill-filtration.
We are also big fans of their Rye with its mash bill made up of 95% rye grain and 5% malted rye.
