Sergio Arcuri is our favourite producer of red wines in the South of Italy. Here we have a wine which is sourced from a one hectare vineyard which was planted in 1948 on bush vines - known as Alberello in Italian on clay soils with a view of the Ionian Sea. The wine is made with wild yeasts and NO sulphites and macerated on its skins for 15 days. Following this the wine is aged for four years in cement vats buried underground in the winery. Sergio exploits the wonderful Gaglioppo grape variety which is, although not related, so similar to Nebbiolo, they could be brothers. The nose is aromatic with forest floor, red fruits, tar, roses and exotic spices. Quite an extraordinary wine.
