Newton Johnson's Albarino was, at the time, the first commercially produced wine from this variety from the Cape. The vineyards are just a few miles inland from the ocean mimicking the homeland of this variety of the Atlantic coast of Spain. The wine has subtle hints of jasmine, white flowers and white peaches and a palate which is leesy and textured. This is a very grown up wine which is great effort as the Newton Johnsons barely have a handful of vintages under their belt for this wine.

The Grape Variety

Albarino is a variety that originates in the Rias Baixas DO of Galicia in north-west Spain and over the border into Portugal, to the region of Minho as a component for making Vinho Verde, where it is known as Alvarinho. The proximity to the cold currents of the Atlantic allows for the gentle ripening of this variety.

No longer a niche variety, Albarino is now grown in many regions of the New World, with many great successes in New Zealand and South Africa.

The wines have great appeal, many have the citrus character of Riesling, while there are richer examples which bear similarity to Viognier, and of course, several points in between these two.

The Country

South Africa

South Africa

South Africa is developing at break-neck speed, so much so that I find it difficult to keep up with all the new, young, driven producers making the next big thing from old-vine Chenin or Chenin blends. There are many high points in our range, but worthy of particular mention are the cool, coastal wines of Newton Johnson, makers of Noble Grape’s favourite best value Pinot Noir, and the quite incredible wines of Chris Williams from The Foundry. From time to time we will have parcels of the aforementioned parcel wines, so keep checking out our latest releases.
