Nals Margreid is Noble Grape's favourite producer in Alto Adige, also known as Sudtirol in the Germanic language that is spoken in this part of the country. Nals Margreid has some of the region's best vineyards for Pinot Bianco, a variety also known as Weissburgunder, planted between the two villages of Nals and Margreid in the beautiful Dolomites rock formations of the pre-Alps. The wine tastes like a cool mountain stream: fragrant, delicate and with crystalline purity and gentle minerality, with an added layer of creaminess that we find all good Pinot Biancos. We would say that this is Italy's answer to Chablis: if only Chablis were as good as this.

Alto Adige

Alto Adige along with Friuli could be considered as the source of Italy’s greatest white wines. The region is bilingual with road signs and town names having both Italian and German versions and was the last region to join unified Italy in 1919, having previously been part of the Austria-Hungary Empire. The climate is influence by the Alps with vineyards planted on the steep hillsides of the Adige Valley. The varieties planted here are a mix of internationals such as Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc alongside the local specialities, but our preference at Noble Grape is for the latter such as Pinot Bianco, Gewurztraminer, Pinot Grigio, Schiava, etc.

We are delighted to present the wines from three wineries, Nals Margreid, Tramin, and Terlan each having their own specialities. The first is renowned for their Pinot Biancos and can boast the region's best example from this variety, Sirmian. Tramin is, among other things, a specialist in Gewürztraminer. You may be forgiven for thinking that Alsace is the spiritual home of this variety, but we would canvass that it is in fact, here, in Alto Adige, that a more convincing claim could be made since the variety is named after the town of Tramin.

Terlan is the latest additon to our range, another of the region's famed cantine sociali making truly extraordinary wines.

Nals Margreid

Nals Margreid is a co-operative, or Cantina Sociale in Italian, which has around 138 members, farming 160 hectares of land. Since 1932 the winery has been at the forefront of winemaking in this part of Italy, Alto Adige. The winery is found in the beautiful village of Nals, and is quite a stunning piece of modern architecture in one of Italy's most dramatic wine regions, in the heart of the Dolomites in the Pre-Alps. The stunning vineyards are located on the hillsides reaching 800M in elevation. The wines are noted for their crystalline purity: to paraphrase world-renowned wine writer and Italian wine guru Nicolas Belfrage MW, the wines taste like drinking from a cool mountain stream.

Nals Margreid produces a huge variety of wines from all the local varieties, Kerner, Gewürztraminer, Riesling Italico, Moscato Giallo, Pinot Grigio etc, but they are most renowned for their Pinot Biancos, with the top of the range being their single-vineyard Sirmian, which at the last count had won Gambero Rosso's top award 'Tre Bicchieri' ten years in a row, and White Wine of the Year for their 2012 - quite an accomplishment.
