Nals Margreid is Noble Grape's favourite producer in Alto Adige, also known as Sudtirol in the Germanic language that is spoken in this part of the country. Nals Margreid has some of the region's best vineyards for Pinot Bianco, a variety also known as Weissburgunder, planted between the two villages of Nals and Margreid in the beautiful Dolomites rock formations of the pre-Alps. The wine tastes like a cool mountain stream: fragrant, delicate and with crystalline purity and gentle minerality, with an added layer of creaminess that we find all good Pinot Biancos. We would say that this is Italy's answer to Chablis: if only Chablis were as good as this.

Who?
Nals Margreid is a co-operative, or Cantina Sociale in Italian, which has around 138 members, farming 160 hectares of land. Since 1932 the winery has been at the forefront of winemaking in this part of Italy. The highly talented Harald Schraffl is the winemaker with the day to day running of the winery conducted by Gottfried Pollinger.

Where?
The winery is located in the beautiful village of Nals, quite a stunning piece of modern architecture in one of Italy's most beautiful wine regions, being located in the heart of the Dolomites in the Pre-Alps. The vineyards are located on the hillsides and reach 800M in elevation. The region is located on the border with Austria and is quite far north in latitude, however, a quirk of geography means that the nearby city of Bolzano is one of Italy's hottest during the summer with the surrounding towering mountains reflecting and trapping the heat. This region is perhaps Italy's best for white wines: many of the top producers such as Nals Margreid, Terlan, Colterenzio, St Michael Eppan and many others all being co-operatives. Contrary to other parts of Italy, the co-ops here are amongst the leading wineries, rather than just being the source of the cheapest wine.

Why?
Nals Margreid produces a huge variety of wines from all the local varieties, Kerner, Gewürztraminer, Riesling Italico, Moscato Giallo, Pinot Grigio etc, but they are most known for their Pinot Bianco. The top wine of the winery is their Pinot Bianco Sirmian, which at the last count had won Gambero Rosso's top award 'Tre Bicchieri' ten years in a row: quite an accomplishment.
