Moulin Touchais 1979 Coteaux du Layon
Moulin Touchais is quite an extraordinary wine for several reasons: the wines from this sweet wine estate are released to the market at a minimum of 10 years old, and quite often are much, much older. The wines are labelled upon release and often are recondition and recorked if need be.
The wines themselves are sweet, but not quite dessert wine sweet, they are better when accompanied with blue cheese or charcuterie. The wine is a blend of early harvested grapes, for the acidity, and late harvest grapes for the sweetness. Even though the wines are released at 10 years old, they are best drunk when they surpass 20.
This 1979 is perfect for drinking now. It perhaps won't improve any further, but it will certainly hold. A perfect gift for someone who will be 40 this year, or for anyone who can appreciate quirky, idiosyncratic wines.
