Bandol is more known for its red & rosé wines. In fact only 10% of the vineyard is dedicated to white varieties. However, we find these whites very interesting, packed with the fresh herb and white fruit scents of the south, with plenty of body to back up the freshness. Moulin de la Roque uses the two most important white varieties of the region, Clairette and Ugni Blanc each bring aromatic and structural components to the wine. The wine sees no oak, spending a little time on its lees for texture, then bottled in the spring.

Moulin de la Roque

Bandol is the most important AOC in Provence for fine wines. The region is around 1580 hectares according to the most recent Cahiers des Charges (2011) but is under constant threat from property development, due to its proximity to the Cotes d'Azur. The region basks in 3,000 hours of annual sunshine, but due to its elevated position and the cooling wind of the Mistral the vineyards maintain a temperate climate allowing for fresh, brisk whites to made in the cooler parts.

The reds are the most important part, with its signature being the noble Mourvedre variety, which must compose at least 50% of the blend. The rosés are some of France's best, whilst all being robust enough to age and improve with several years in bottle.

Moulin de la Roque is a company formed by the coming together of three co-operatives, comprised of 200 members and 313 hectares covering all eight communes of the appellation. The wines are remarkably well priced for a region known for its high-priced and highly sought-after wines.

Provence

Provence is perhaps the most picturesque of France's wine regions with azure coasts and lavender fields. There has been a tsunami of rosé flooding our shores from this region, some of it of questionable quality, but in the majority the wines are extremely likeable and in some instances, outstanding.

We are particularly fond of Domaine des Mapliers for their sophisticated and gastronomic style, but who can forget Chateau d'Esclans for their Whispering Angel which is nothing short of a phenomenon. The very best examples in our opinion come from the world class estate of Domaine Tempier producing outstanding wines in all three colours.
