Monchiero 2016 Barolo 'Rocche di Castiglione'
Monchiero is, in my opinion, perhaps Barolo's greatest under-the-radar producer. This winery dates back to 1971 and owns vineyards in some of Barolo's most prestigious crus, notably Rocche di Castiglione, a precipitous south-east facing site in Castiglione Falletto that borders Bussia at its southerly edge. This cru is famed for its elegant and long lived wines. Monchiero is ultra-traditional in its winemaking philosophy with very long macerations using the submerged cap method (capo sommerso in Italian) which is a gentle in its extraction but brings out the best in Nebbiolo. This 2016 version was one of my favourites from my tastings with notes of Assam tea, wild berries, tar and roses, and high notes of red currants. All things being considered this wine is quite extraordinary value, and will give many, many years of pleasure.
