Monchiero 2014 Barolo 'Montanello'
Monchiero is, in my opinion, perhaps Barolo's greatest under-the-radar producer. This winery dates back to 1971 and owns vineyards in some of Barolo's most prestigious crus, notably Rocche di Castiglione, a precipitous south-east facing site in Castiglione Falletto that borders Bussia at its southerly edge. This cru is famed for its elegant and long lived wines. Monchiero is ultra-traditional in its winemaking philosophy with very long macerations using the submerged cap method (capo sommerso in Italian) which is a gentle in its extraction but brings out the best in Nebbiolo. Montanello is great vineyard, located in Castiglione Falletto, facing south-west and next door to the famed Bricco Boschis vineyard of the Cavallotto family. This cru is renowned for its complex and ageworthy wines.
