Luigi Einaudi 2016 Barolo 'Terlo Vigna Costa Grimaldi'
Poderi Luigi Einaudi's reputation goes back to 1896 when the winery was established by Luigi Einaudi who later became Italy's 2nd President of the Republic. This historic producer is known for being the best producer of Dolcetto, and they are also making some utterly fantastic Barolos. They have a number of vineyards in prestigious sites such as Cannubi, Bussia and Monvigliero (we'll have to wait until 2025 to see the latter one), but it is their Terlo Vigna Costa Grimaldi that invariably impresses me the most. Terlo is a cru (Menzione Geografica Aggiuntiva in Italian) in the commune of Barolo, with a south-east facing and steep-sided slopes on sandy soil. The wine is supremely elegant and complex, perhaps more roses than tar, but for me its the persistence of flavours that come through in this particular vineyard, and it ages incredibly well. For me, one of the stars of the vintage.
