Lopez de Heredia 2016 Vina Gravonia Rioja Blanco
R. Lopez de Heredia, also known as Tondonia, is, in my opinion, the greatest producer in Rioja. Founded in 1877, their winemaking style has barely changed, holding fast to the traditions of their founder, Rafael Lopez de Heredia.
Vina Gravonia is their youngest white, which has spent four years in cask and the rest in bottle, made from 100% Viura. The wine has extraordinary complexity and richness. The name Gravonia is a corruption of Graves, alluding to the finest dry whites of Bordeaux. The wine shows some characteristics similar to the finest, high-percentage Sémillon Dry White Bordeaux.
Almost devoid of fruit characters, perhaps a little white currant. Instead, it has fully developed tertiary notes of beeswax, verbena, honeysuckle, and maybe a little bitter orange high note.
Vina Gravonia is a hugely distinctive wine from what seems like another age of winemaking.
