Joseph Mellot 2018 Reuilly Rosé 'Les Milets'
This is our favourite rosé of the year. A fabulous, dry and aromatic wine from Reuilly, a small region of the Loire, about an hour from Sancerre. Here, Pinot Gris is the speciality and Joseph Mellot's Les Milets has gentle red fruits with notes of spring flowers, stoned fruits, pink grapefruit and candied citrus peel. We loved this wine so much we bought all the wine available for the UK. Delicious now, but because of its beautiful crisp acidity and body it will age for another 2 - 3 years.

Joseph Mellot was founded in Sancerre in 1513, by Pierre Antoine Mellot, so with over 500 years of winemaking heritage behind them they have built up an impressive domaine with over 100 hectares of vineyards covering all the appellations of the central Loire. In 1984, the current generation of Alexandre Mellot invested heavily in new vineyards, modernisation of the winery and developing exports. Following Alexandre's death in 2005, the estate is now run by his widow Catherine and her sons.
The estate is mostly known for Sancerre, but at Noble Grape we have chosen their wines from Reuilly: a much smaller appellation of 215 hectares, but a region that has greatly expanded since the 1980s when there were a mere 53 hectares in 1983, due to the popularity and perceived great value of the wines. Reuilly is planted to Pinot Noir and Sauvignon Blanc, but our interest in is the wines made from Pinot Gris, which comes as a pale, scented rosé (or Gris, as they call it here). There are also small amounts of Gamay which are sold as IGP. Pinot Gris is locally known as Pinot Beurot (or Pinot Burot), and is more commonly found on the more gravelly soils.
The region is geologically similar to Sancerre in that is on the western extremity of the kimmeridgian marls from the Bassin de Paris which extends into the vineyards of Champagne and as far as Chablis. Similar, but not identical: here the ground is sandier, which makes wines that are fruitier and fuller in character and, more apparent in the Sauvignons than that of the Pinot Gris, less durable in the cellar.
