Berncasteler Doctor is one of Mosel's most outstanding vineyards, renowned since the Middle Ages for its quality and age-ability. The vineyard is impossibly steep, reaching a 70% gradient, facing south and southwest. The grapes reach full maturity, often making some of Germany's most remarkable dry and sweet wines.
This version, made by Dr H. Thanisch Erben Thanisch, is a Grosses Gewachs, meaning it is dry. It is a little reticent but shows its nobility through minerality and a surprising amount of honeyed richness. Layers of candied lemon peel, baked apples, and stoned fruits are present and pulses with electricity.
Badstube is a mid-sloped vineyard West/South-West facing with blue grey slate with a little loam, classified as Grosse Lage. It is a stunning vineyard whose wines have a perfect balance of maturity and liveliness. Feinherb is a style of wine produced in the Mosel, that translates to 'off-dry', essentially drier than you would typically find in Mosel Riesling Kabinett. The 2022 is packed with ripe apricot flavours, subtle minerality, and just a hint of elderflower and is utterly delicious.
Ernst Loosen of the renowned Dr Loosen estate produces a delicious Mosel Riesling, Dr L, from grapes sourced from Mosel growers. The wines are vinified by the same team that makes the Dr Loosen estate wines. Ernst is not only a great winemaker but perhaps the best ambassador for German wines. He tirelessly takes his wines to the market, showing the diversity and excellence of these wines.
The 2022 is a delicious, light Riesling with crisp, lemony fruit, distinct minerality, and subtle touches of green apples.
In a true Mosel style, this has 43g/l of residual sugar, making it semi-sweet.
Wehlener Sonnenuhr is one of Mosel's Grosse Lage—Grand Cru—vineyards on steep slopes between 60% and 100%. The vineyard is rocky and composed of blue slate, which brings haunting minerality to the wines. This expression, made by the world-famous Dr. Loosen, is simply delicious. The vines here are, on average, 60 years old, and the resulting wine is aged in a combination of stainless steel and traditional fuder casks.
Due to the warm summer, 2022 has intense ripeness but a little less sweetness than usual, and the acidity helps bring the scintillating minerality to the fore.
As a guide, this wine has 40 g/l of residual sugar, making it semi-sweet.
Villa Wolf has owned this historic estate in Pfalz since 1996, but the winemaking here dates back to 1756. The wine is typical Pfalz with a richness and body not found in the Mosel. Flavours of apricots, peaches, red fruits and soft, generous palate.
This medium-bodied fruity Riesling has lovely peach and stone fruit flavours, with a hint of apricot. Nicely balanced acidity gives it a juicy palate. At around twenty g/l of residual sugar, this is an off-dry Riesling, making it incredibly versatile with food or as an aperitif.
