South Africa: The New Wave

The South African wine scene is moving at break-neck speed, with a whole new generation of growers and winemakers setting out to produce wines that are largely based on old vines and often from multiple regions with field blends of varieties.

This younger generation, what I like to call the 'New Wave', are now producing wines of a quality never seen before in South Africa. The likes of Chris and Suzaan Alheit who exploit old vine Chenin Blanc and Semillon to make their cult wine 'Cartology' and their single-vineyard wine 'Hemelrand Vine Garden' are now at the top of their game in this country, making South Africa one of the most exciting places to find fine white wines at the moment. These wines are made in minuscule quantities and are normally snapped up very quickly.

We are very pleased to introduce the wines of Thorne & Daughters whose repertoire includes beautiful old vines of Chenin Blanc and Semillon but also rediscovering Rhone varieties such as Roussanne and Clairette, alongside red Rhone varieties of Grenache Noir, old vine Cinsault and Mourvedre.

Newton Johnson seeks out much cooler sites in the Cape South Coast from regions such as Bot River and Worcester for their Chablis-esque Chardonnay and Cote de Beaune-style Pinot Noir under the 'Felicité' label. The Pinot is rapidly becoming Noble Grape's favourite everyday Pinot delivering delicious, cool fruit with real style.

The wines of Chris Williams of The Foundry go from strength-to-strength with his 2015 Grenache Blanc (unfortunately now all sold) winning White Wine of the Year in the 2018 John Platter Guide. His Syrah is a fine expression of this variety from a cool climate with notes of black pepper, smoked meat and violets.

In time we will have more to add to this section so keep checking in on our latest arrivals.
