Don Maximiano is one one of the top reds from the Errazuriz estate. The Founder's Reserve is a Bordeaux-style blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Carmenere and Petit Verdot. The wine is rich and glossy with complex notes of dried herbs, cedar wood with a top note of fresh mint. This 2013 is fully mature, but will keep for another 10 years or so if cellared well. Lovers of modern Bordeaux or Napa Valley wines will not be disappointed with this excellent example of one of Chile's best reds.

Errazuriz

The Errazuriz Estate was founded in 1870 when Don Maximiano Errazuriz planted his first vineyards at Panquehue in the Aconcagua Valley – 100km north of Santiago.

Eduardo is Don Maximiano’s descendant and the 5th generation of his family to be involved in winemaking. Eduardo is without a doubt one of the most important actors in the Chilean wine scene and also one of its most enthusiastic and charismatic promoters. An Industrial Engineer by profession, after finishing university Eduardo learned viticulture and winemaking from his father Alfonso and later studied in Bordeaux. This education led him to bring new technological modernisations to the family winery and vineyard, enabling him to bring the winery into the 21st century and place Chile firmly on the fine wine map of the world.

In 2018, Eduardo was named ‘Decanter Man of the Year’ for his tireless championing of Chilean fine wine.

The estate consists of vineyards in three locations: Don Maximiano Estate in the Aconcagua Valley where the finest reds such as Founder's Reserve are made; the Manzanar Estate specialising in Pinot Noir, Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc; and finally La Escultura in Casablanca, the coolest spot where Pinot, Chardonnay and Sauvignon also thrive.

The Country

Chile

Chile

Chilean winemakers will tell you that this country is an almost perfect environment to grow wine grapes: a favourable climate, that has its fair share of cool, warm and hot spots, allowing for a wide range of styles and varieties to be grown. It is relatively pest and disease free, due to having the Andes on one side and the Pacific Ocean on the other, and of course it has the legacy of Spanish culture. It has somewhat made Carmenere its spiritual home, but aside from that variety there is a huge array of others grown here from the Rieslings of Bio Bio to the Syrahs of San Antonio, and all shades in-between.
