Saint-Bris is the only appellation in Burgundy that is allowed to grow Sauvignon Blanc. The village of Saint-Bris Le Vineux is around 15km from Chablis and is found on similar chalky marl soil, making highly mineral wines that have, generally speaking, more in common with the Chardonnays of Chablis than they are of the Sauvignons of the Loire, 90km or so away. The region is small at a mere 140 hectares, but there are many artisan small producers worthy of note. Clotidle Davenne has been making Saint Bris since the 1990s. We admire the gentle aromatics, the minerality and creaminess in this wine - both distinctive and original.

Burgundy

Burgundy is a fascinating region that can take a lifetime to understand its complexities. A myriad of appellations and single vineyards further complicated by thousands of producers and merchants, each with their own 'house' style.

In simple terms, Pinot Noir for the reds and Chardonnay for the whites, but there are a few other varieties that make cameos such as Sauvignon Blanc, Aligoté and Gamay. The region stretches from Chablis in the north to Beaujolais in the south via the Cote d'Or, Maconnais and Chalonnaise.

Highlights include the outrageously good value Santenay from Prieur Brunet in the reds and J.A. Ferret's beautiful Pouilly Fuisse.
