Castello Montaùto 2019 Vernaccia di San Gimignano

In stock

Vernaccia di San Gimignano is a native grape variety to this very small DOCG in Tuscany. This was the very first DOC in Italy which was granted in 1966, becoming the superior version of DOCG in 1993. Castello Montaùto is one of the region's most important estates, owned by the Cecchi family since 1988. The wine is made from low yielding vines on sandy, tuff soils, making a wine which is not only rich in body but mineral with a salty tang. Although delicious now, Vernaccia has wonderful capacity to age due to its very good acidity and body. Aromas of white fruits, hazelnuts, white flowers and fresh herbs, with lingering scents of a summer meadow

Castello Montaùto is owned by Famiglia Cecchi one of Tuscany's most famous family owned wineries. Cecchi was founded in 1893 but has owned this estate since 1988. Cecchi owns a number of other wineries in Tuscany and Umbria including Villa Cerna, Monte Guelfo and Val Delle Rose.

The vineyard is located in the hamlet of Montaùto a few KMs south of San Gimignano itself and is comprised of 48 hectares of vineyards, planted to both Vernaccia and Sangiovese. San Gimignano itself only has 510 hectares of Vernaccia, and its plantings are in decline from its peak of around 800 in 1990. This autochthonous variety has suffered losses to international varieties that appeal to new markets, but at Noble Grape we are big fans of this, now rare, vine. The vineyards are located on sandy, tuff soils and at 240 - 270 metres above sea level.

Castello Montaùto is a leading producer of Vernaccia di San Gimignano. The wines are fresh, but have richness and a string streak of salty minerality that goes so well with Mediterranean cuisine. Famiglia Cecchi has a mission for quality of quantity keeping the yields very low, at around 6 tonnes per hectare, savagely lower than the maximum of 9 allowed by the DOCG. Vernaccia di San Gimignano has been a victim of international varieties, but Montaùto is keeping this historic and authentic wine alive and bringing to new audiences around the globe.
