Garganega
Garganega is a white grape variety that is primarily grown in the Veneto region of northeastern Italy. It is one of the most important grape varieties used in the production of Soave, where it must constitute at least 70% of the blend. Garganega grapes produce wines with characteristic nutty, citrus, and almond notes. It's natural high acidity allows it make delicious sweet Passito wines, in particular Recioto di Soave.
In addition to Soave, Garganega is also used to produce other Italian wines such as Gambellara, Custoza, and Colli Euganei. Garganega grapes are typically grown on volcanic soils and the resulting wines are known for their minerality, crisp acidity, and ability to age well. Garganega is often blended with other grape varieties, such as Trebbiano di Soave (aka Verdicchio) and Chardonnay, to add complexity to the wines.
