Galicia

Galicia is in northwest Spain, known for its unique climate, which is influenced by the Atlantic Ocean and the nearby mountain ranges, and for its diverse range of grape varieties.

The most famous Galician wines are white wines made from the Albariño grape, which is grown primarily in the Rías Baixas DO in the south of Galicia. These wines are typically dry, crisp, and aromatic, with flavours of citrus and stone fruit.

Other important white grape varieties in Galicia include Godello, Treixadura, and Loureira, which are used to produce white wines with different styles and flavours. Galicia also produces red wines, primarily from the Mencía grape variety, which is grown in the Ribeira Sacra, Ribeiro, and Valdeorras DOs.

Galicia has a long history of winemaking, with evidence of wine production dating back to Roman times. However, it was not until the 1980s and 1990s that the region began to gain recognition for its high-quality wines, and not just Albariño.
