Sam Lambson, Minimalist Wines
Minimalist Wines is our latest discovery of nouvelle vague wineries from South Africa. It is the creation of Sam Lambson, a graduate of Oenology at University of Stellenbosch and veteran of vintages with Chris Ahleit and Lukas Van Loggerenberg.
Sam's mission is to create cool climate Syrahs, seeking to recreate the style of wines that he fell in love with from the Northern Rhone. His first vintage, 2018, was solely from one parcel of vines in Elim, Cape Agulhas, at the most southerly part of the African continent where the Atlantic and Indian oceans meet. It was here that Sam found vineyards planted on shale and clay soils littered with 'Koffieklip', or coffee stone (or Ferricrete, as it is known to geologists) - a hard sedimentary conglomerate rock which is poor in nourishment, making the vines roots delve deeper, whilst naturally keeping yields very low. Sam has now added a further two parcels of Syrah to make this wine, starting with the 2020 vintage.
