As regular followers of Noble Grape will know, we are smitten with the wines of the Brajkovich family at Kumeu River. For us, these are the best Chardonnays in the Antipodes. What is getting us salivating is the prospect of a new single vineyard Chardonnay from their Ray's Road vineyard in Hawkes Bay.
Kumeu River bought this vineyard in 2017 which was originally founded as a joint venture between Hawkes Bay producer Trinity Hill and Sancerre producer Pascal Jolivet. Last autumn we saw the release of the first wine from this new project, the 2018 Sauvignon Blanc. Now we are excited announce the imminent arrival of the first Chardonnay in 3 weeks time, to be followed by the first release of Pinot Noir later in the autumn.
We are yet to taste this wine, but be assured we will at the earliest opportunity. All we have to go on for the moment is the winemaker's notes from Michael Brajkovich MW.
"All of our Chardonnay from 2018 is supple and approachable but the limestone soils of this vineyard give us quite a different expression to the vineyards we have in Kumeu. The wine is fragrant and flinty with a hint of pink grapefruit. The palate is supple but with a limestone edge that is piercing and lingering. It will be interesting to see how this wine develops but we fully expect to see it improve with bottle age along the same lines as the other Kumeu River wines."
